DIABETES (E10-E14)

Diabetes (E10-E14) was the second leading underlying cause of death of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians in 2013. Diabetes accounted for 202 deaths or 7.6% of all deaths of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians. The age standardised death rate for diabetes was six times higher for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians compared to non-Indigenous Australians in 2013 (90.4 per 100,000 and 15.1 per 100,000, respectively).

In 2013, Diabetes was the leading cause of death of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander females and it accounted for 10.0% of all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander female deaths (compared to 5.7% males). The sex ratio for deaths of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders due to Diabetes was 66.9 male deaths per 100 female deaths. Over the past five years the number of deaths due to Diabetes in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australian females has increased by 15.2%, in contrast to the 2.1% increase reported in non-Indigenous Australian females.
